Legacy (Seaside)

“During summer holidays, we flock to our beautiful coastlines to enjoy sports and leisure activities. “Legacy (Seaside)” is part of the “Legacy” series that I am currently working on which serves as an affirmation of the abidance of our planet with all its possibilities of life of which we are a fleeting part.

In this image the ghostly appearance of the trees, the birds, the fish and the people reminds us that all these species are temporary, in contrast with the relative permanence of the oceans and earth. Present inhabitants of the earth could be the “ghosts” of the future. The oceans and earth will bear witness to species survival and extinction.

The image reflects also on the interdependence of all life forms and the need to maintain this equilibrium.

The series will also highlight the realisation that there are millions of years ahead for our planet, and the changes that will take place thereon are impossible for us to contemplate. It focuses on the transient experience of all living creatures on earth, illustrating the cycles of life and the journeys of species.”

London in Motion

London, UK, 2013

These were captured while walking around the streets of London in late winter. I shot from the waist with a slow shutter speed to create the wonderful motion effects, using the natural flow of the buildings to add depth and the wet streets to bounce and reflect the light.

Atlantis Dunes

Cape Town, South Africa, 2009

The Atlantis dunes can be found about half an hour drive up the west coast from Cape Town. It is often used as a film location as the sand dunes have the same appearance as a dessert. This was actually shot while out there on a recce for the film Scorpion King.

Groblersdal - Cape Flats

Elsies Rivier, South Africa, 2010

The Cape Flats is a flat sandy stretch of land located on the outskirts of Cape Town. Elsies River is one of the townships where a community struggles to make ends meet, their overcrowded environment a breeding ground for gangs and other unsavoury activities. Their individual possessions and screens lend splashes of colour to an otherwise dreary, neglected building. I was watched suspiciously by the inhabitants and was grateful to have a community leader at my side. The beauty of the intense blue sky and soft clouds is in sharp contrast to the rundown neighbourhood.

Wealth of Nations

“It is said that money and wealth can have negative or positive effects on people. I explored the tension between these two poles in this work by combining various positive and negative background plates and, working in greyscale, created a two toned effect, enhancing the positive and negative elements. The indistinguishable appearances of the people in the image represent the faceless and nameless citizens who together contribute to the building of a nation’s wealth – a cross section of the population representing a heady mix of cultures and influences each with their own unique contribution.

The Wealth Of Nations photograph features The Royal Exchange, which since 1568 has become the home of commerce for the city of London. The image focuses on the themes of work and money. The streets are littered with twenty pound notes showing the face of Adam Smith – the notes could be seen as representative of the wealth of today’s nation. Why does everyone ignore the money? It seems they are more intent on going about their work. The theme of money continues throughout the image as we see saplings representative of the “money tree”. The trees are growing from a pile of coins, and the leaves are slowly developing into pound notes, representing how money makes money.

The Wealth Of Nations is the major work by the Scottish economist and moral philosopher Adam Smith. First published in 1776, the book offers one of the world’s first collected descriptions of what builds a nation’s wealth and is today a fundamental work in classical economics at universities throughout the world.”

Autumn Obscura

London, UK, 2012

With my camera mounted onto my tripod and my ND filter in place I exposed for 6 seconds before rotating the tripod head back and forth. This created the horizontal blurs over the image which add a nice motion effect. I then gave the image an antique looking grade in post.

Fair Play

“ Sitting in a coffee shop across the road from the The Royal Courts of Justice I wondered how I could create a visual piece that would remind us all that a good constitution, upheld by an independent judiciary, will ensure that our children and grandchildren will grow up in a free and just society. In my mind’s eye I stripped away everything that detracted from the beautiful building itself. The continuous flow of traffic, the hordes of people, the chatter of the city in mid-week swing. In the stillness, I heard a child laugh behind me, and it was this joyful sound that became the inspiration for “Fair Play” as it is today”.

The photograph shows carefree, innocent children, learning how to play fair by observing the rules of their games. Behind them, the Royal Courts stand as a constant edifice ensuring that as generations pass, the rules of the game will remain fair and ensure a balance of the utilities of justice, liberty and security.

The Magna Carta (1215) was the basis for democracy as we know it. The people were given the power. Without this document, the great democracies of the world and the documents that formed them, would not be here today. Adapted over the centuries, Clause 39 of the Great Charter became the cornerstone of English liberty; ” No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any other way, nor will we proceed with force against him, or send others to do so, except by the lawful judgment of his equals or by the law of the land.”
